چکیده

The dynamics of changes in K(+) influx across the plasmalemma and of internal K(+) concentrations [K(+)](1) of intact barley (Hordeum vulgare) roots were examined as the roots were converted from ;high-salt' to ;low-salt' roots. Following the transfer of plants grown in 0.5 mm CaSO(4) solutions plus various concentrations of KCl to 0.5 mm CaSO(4) solutions, influx rates increased and internal K(+) concentrations declined as a function of time and the initial K(+) status of the tissue. The relationship between plasmalemma influx and [K(+)](1) was examined over a wide range of [K(+)](1) values by growing intact plants in various concentrations of KCl. Plasmalemma influx was inversely correlated with the square of [K(+)](1). A model for the regulation of plasmalemma influx by [K(+)](1) is considered.

Cation-Anion Balance during Potassium and Sodium Absorption by Barley Roots

Steady-state rates of potassium ion and sodium ion absorption by excised barley roots accompanied by various anions were compared with the rates of anion absorption and the concomitant H(+) and base release by the roots. The cation absorption rates were found to be independent of the identities, concentrations, and rates of absorption of the anions of the external solution, including bicarbonat...

Calcium inhibition of potassium absorption in corn roots.

Calcium (or magnesium) sulfate or chloride was found to inhibit energy dependent potassium transport in excised corn roots. This Ca(2+) inhibition of K(+) transport was most pronounced during the initial phases of transport. As the absorption periods were lengthened the effect of Ca(2+) gradually changed from an inhibition to a typical promotion (after about 30-45 mins) of K(+) transport. Kinet...

A Kinetic Study of the Absorption of Alkali Cations by Barley Roots.

The absorption of inorganic salts by plant roots and other biological systems depends upon metabolic processes. When absorption proceeds against a concentration gradient, an expenditure of metabolically derived energy is obviously required. In some systems, such as barley roots, even absorption along a concentration gradient is negligible under conditions of arrested metabolism; and the concent...
